About the role

As an Intensive Care Specialist, you'll play a central role in delivering advanced critical care to some of the most complex and high-acuity patients in the region. This position offers the opportunity to work at the forefront of intensive care medicine within Wellington Regional Hospital's state-of-the-art ICU and HDU facilities. You will provide expert clinical leadership, manage acute and elective critical care patients, and contribute to the ongoing development of a service recognised for its excellence, capability, and regional reach.

In this role, you will participate in a consultant on'call roster, support aeromedical retrievals through the Wellington Aeromedical Retrieval Service, and provide specialist advice across the district and wider region. You'll be actively involved in teaching, supervising RMOs and multidisciplinary colleagues, and engaging in quality improvement, clinical audit, and service development initiatives. About the Team/Service/ Location

As an Intensive Care Specialist, you will be a key clinical leader within Wellington Regional Hospital's ICU and HDU, delivering high'quality care to a broad range of critically ill patients. This role offers the opportunity to work in one of Aotearoa's most advanced tertiary critical care services, providing both planned and acute care while contributing to a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

You'll participate in the consultant on'call roster, ensuring expert oversight during acute events and supporting services such as the Patient at Risk team and the Medical Emergency Team. As part of the Wellington Aeromedical Retrieval Service, you will also provide specialist input into regional retrievals and transfers, extending your impact across a large and diverse geographic area.

Teaching and mentoring are key parts of the position, including supervision of RMOs and support for the ongoing professional development of the wider multidisciplinary team. You will actively contribute to clinical audit, service development, and quality improvement initiatives, helping shape the future of critical care delivery. This role also embodies Te Whatu Ora's commitment to equity and Te Tiriti o Waitangi, ensuring care is delivered in a way that is culturally responsive, safe, and equitable.

Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley district is located centrally in Wellington and has over 6,000 full-time equivalent staff, making us one of the major employers in the Wellington region. We operate three hospitals ' Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown, Hutt Valley Hospital and Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua ' as well as the Kapiti Health Centre at Paraparaumu.

About you

  • Vocationally registered in Intensive Care Medicine with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ)
  • Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine (FCICM) or equivalent to be able to register for vocational registration with the MCNZ'
  • Work in collaboration with multidisciplinary team
  • Able to provide consistently high standards of medical care
  • Relevant experience and training
