Mo tatou | About us - What we do Our role at Antarctica New Zealand is to support world-leading science and environmental protection in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. Scott Base is the hub of New Zealand's activities in Antarctica and each year, we employ seasonal staff to manage base activity and support science in the field.

Mō te mahi | About the role - What you'll be doing It takes a passionate, diverse, and highly skilled team to run Scott Base.

To support safe and efficient helicopter and fixed wing operations in Antarctica. The role involves preparing manifests, loads and passengers for flight – ensuring compliance with safety standards.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Organising cargo into helicopter and fixed wing flight loads and completing associated documentation.
  • Preparing, building and rigging helicopter sling loads for transport including in remote and isolated locations and in challenging conditions.
  • Supporting aircraft operations in remote isolated locations including loading, radio communications, weather updates
  • Conduct regular checks of ground equipment to ensure proper function and maintenance
  • Maintaining best practice safety standards and a supportive customer service to visiting personnel across all interactions – resource coordination, science event preparation etc.

This is a 6 month (summer) role from approximately August 2026 to February 2027

Required Skills and Experience Include:

  • A minimum of 3 years operational experience working around helicopters and/or fixed wing aircraft.
  • Ground crew or aviation safety training certifications.
  • Knowledge of ground handling procedures and safety protocols
  • Experience with ground-handling equipment and vehicles
  • Proven ability to plan and work efficiently under pressure to deliver critical outcomes and manage change in plans is essential.
  • Confident communicator that can easily foster positive working relationships with a range of personalities.
  • Physical fitness - ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy objects and working in various weather conditions.
