The Waka is commonly known as the name for the giant carved war canoes which carry up to 100 warriors.
Waka actually means a sacred vessel such as a canoe or anything designed to carry and protect sacred objects.
Small Waka chests were carved to store sacred objects such as carvings handed down over many generations, remains of ancestors for their journey to the spirit world, fine spear tips and sacred ceremonial feathers from the rare Huia bird.
The Wakahuia then is a sacred carved box which was used for storing valuables "Taonga" such as the feathers of the Huia bird worn on special ceremonial occasions.
