Chef & Kitchen Assistant – Gatehouse Café (Templeton, Christchurch)

We are currently hiring for: Chef (Full-Time) Kitchen Assistant (Part-Time)

Chef – Full-Time (30+ hours/week)

A hands-on role for someone confident working independently and able to manage kitchen workflow during busy service.

About the Role

Approx. 30+ hours per week Key role within a small, fast-paced kitchen team

Key Responsibilities

Prepare and present cabinet food, brunch dishes, and menu items Lead daily kitchen prep and organise workflow Maintain food quality, consistency, and presentation standards Manage your section independently during service

What We’re Looking For

Minimum 2 years’ café or kitchen experience Confident working independently in a busy kitchen Strong attention to detail and presentation Able to stay organised and perform under pressure Reliable, consistent, and takes ownership of their work

Kitchen Assistant – Part-Time (20+ hours/week)

A support role ideal for someone who enjoys kitchen work and is keen to learn and grow in a café environment.

About the Role

Approx. 20+ hours per week Hands-on kitchen support role

Key Responsibilities

Assist with food prep, cabinet items, and basic cooking tasks Support baking and general kitchen preparation Assist chefs during busy service Maintain cleanliness and organisation

What We’re Looking For

At least 1 year kitchen or café experience preferred Basic cooking and food prep skills Willing to learn and take direction Able to keep up with a fast-paced service environment Positive attitude and team-focused mindset

Working Hours (Both Roles)

Daytime only – no night shifts Weekdays: 7:00am – 3:00pm Weekends: 8:00am – 2:00pm (rostered)

General Requirements (Both Roles)

Reliable, punctual, and able to work under pressure Strong work ethic and consistent attendance Able to follow systems, recipes, and instructions Physically able to safely lift up to 20kg Must have legal right to work in New Zealand Available for in-person interview in Christchurch
