Codd patent aerated waters (aka marble bottles) are very well known in bottle collector circles, but I suspect that many don't spare much thought as to how they were originally opened, more concerned about just collecting the damned things :-)

Other than jamming a spoon handle or something in to dislodge the marble, more civilised folk used proper openers like these, consisting of (usually) wooden caps that fit nicely over the tops with a dowel inside of just the right size to push the marble down out of the rubber ring.

You've got here three really lovely examples in a darkly polished wood, that actually show some appropriate wear on the inside consistent with having been used in anger, not just modern reproduction decorative props.
