Rare Georgian Sterling Silver Earnshaw Spring Detent Chronometer Pocket Watch by Gray - London 1824

This has a rare early Earnshaw style spring detent marine chronometer escapement. These watches were primarily used for ships navigation at sea during the late 18th and 19th centuries. The dial is signed William Baird London and the movement is signed Gray London. I believe that it is most likely William Baird Gray London as there are quite a few William Grays listed at that time. The outer case has Birmingham hallmarks for the same year "1824" so is either a replacement or for some weird reason they assayed the outer and inner case at different cities which I've never come across that before but the outer case is a perfect fit and doesn't feel as if its a replacement. Unsure though!

It's in Good Running Order!! Keeps approx 1 minute over 24 hours and is in excellent condition for its age, as seen in the pictures. It has a solid sterling silver double pair case with full English hallmarks for "London 1824" on the inner case and "Birmingham 1824" on the outer case. Both cases are a perfect fit but very strange to have different hallmarks from the same year and be a perfect fit. The outer case also has a hand made Georgian period needlework cover inside to protect the inner case. The dial is white enamel porcelain with roman numerals, a seconds dial at 6 o'clock, quality hand made gilt spade style hands and is signed "Willm Baird London". It has a clean glass crystal to protect the dial. The movement is a rare English key wind, 11 jewel, gilt full plate fusee and chain drive movement with a Earnshaw style spring detent escapement and ornately engraved with face balance cock with diamond end stone. The movement is signed "Gray London" and is numbered "976". Comes with a key!!
