Description
Antique German Wall Barometer – DRGM Marked, ca. 1890s
A decorative German wall barometer dating to the late 1800s (or turn of the century), with a silvered spelter case, embossed romantic landscape scene, and a central barometer dial printed in English (“Stormy / Rain / Change / Fair / Very Dry”).
Marked “FR & Co / DRGM” (Friedrich Reusswig & Co, Lüdenscheid, Germany). The DRGM stamp shows this was a registered German design, confirming authenticity and dating it reasonably securely.
Details
Age: c. 1895–1915
Maker: Friedrich Reusswig & Co (Germany)
Material: Silvered spelter (zinc alloy), glass over dial
Design: Embossed rustic scene with half-timbered house, tree and sun
Condition: Good antique condition. Some tarnish and age wear to the metal, barometer movement is good (and tested against another modern barometer).
These barometers were popular export items to Britain, combining German decorative castings with English-language dials. Today, they appeal to collectors of scientific instruments, Black Forest metalware, and Victorian/Edwardian home décor. The DRGM patent marking makes this a particularly interesting, documented example.
I’m helping to dispose of a pretty large (and in some instances, extraordinary) antique and vintage item collection(mostly Victorian but some earlier items). Be sure to check out my other listings as well—there are more antiques, collectables, and vintage treasures available.
