Description
Welcome to cc coins Up for auction is a Ex-dealers lot of 20 Byzantine Bronze trachy coins, minted during the Latin Occupation of Constantinople between 1204-1261 AD
These coins have all been professionally cleaned, identified and packaged within 2x2 vinyl coin flips with information inserts.
The trachy denomination was the lowest value Byzantine denomination during the 13th century AD. They are today also know as 'cup coins' due to their concave shapes. This was thought to allow for easy stacking when counting or could potentially be an Archaism for a practice of using the concave shape to produce coin in precious metal as these were more difficult to counterfeit and gold/silver plate.
During the 4th Holy crusade, the city of Constantinople was sold our by the Venetians and occupied by crusaders, who then became the issuing authority of coins after the flight of emperor Alexios V. They produced over a dozen different obverse/reverse combinations which are available to be randomly selected from this auction.
