SIR CHARLES KINGSFORD-SMITH, COMMEMORATIVE COIN/ ROUND >FIRST TRANS-PACIFIC FLIGHT in 1928 > ONE TALA// ONE OUNCE STERLING SILVER ROUND. 'COIN' Commemorated 50 Years since Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith's First Pacific Flight in 1928. The round is probably of Sterling Silver quality or .925 Purity. It's numismatic value is unknown but clearly represents a physical momento of an event of some considerable moment and historical significance. It's place in a collection of Aviation Milestone items is undoubted. Minted in 1978, The Coin depicts K-S's flight route (& map) from the USA (Oakland, California) to Australia & eventually NZ, via Way-Points in Hawaii, Western Samoa & Fiji. The obverse reads 'Samoa - Sisifo' & depicts ? query, the Western Samoan Coat of Arms. Obviously, the original flight so commemorated, is fast coming up on it's Centenary in 2028, celebrating a Century of of Cross-Pacific flights. Clearly the Coin will hold some interest for aviation enthusiasts and those with an interest in milestones in the development & evolution of global transportation & aviation. The value is difficult to calculate although initial circulation was approximately 5000 coins, This Coin is uncirculated in a B-Grade Case, although the Coin is unmarked, in it's original perspex container. I suspect it's primary value is as an historical artifact, depicting an event of considerable import. The Round is a proof strike & it's provenance is attested by an accompanying Document from Mobray Collectables. Obviously the case has suffered not only normal 'wear & tear' and aging (at almost 50 years of age) but had suffered a couple of dents/ dings & some degrading/ decomposition due to age. As I say, the case is scuffed & worn and probably b- (the Coin is A Grade).
