Stunning Hand-Carved Papua New Guinea Storyboard – Sepik Province Style
Own a piece of authentic Melanesian culture with this exquisite hand-carved wooden storyboard from Papua New Guinea. Purchased by me in 1994 from an art gallery in Port Moresby while I was living there, this unique piece is believed to depict scenes from village life in the Sepik region — one of PNG’s most artistically rich and culturally deep provinces.
Storyboards in PNG aren't just decorative — they’re carved history. Used traditionally by Sepik River communities, these boards were storytelling tools, often mounted inside men’s spirit houses (Haus Tambaran). They depicted ancestral myths, tribal battles, initiation rituals, daily life, and creation legends — visually preserving sacred stories across generations.
