Description
A stunning pair of traditional Makonde palaver chairs, intricately hand-carved in East Africa, likely mid-20th century. These chairs are carved from solid hardwood and feature rich scenes of African wildlife in high relief, including elephants, antelope, birds, and crocodiles, with each chair telling its own visual story. The artistry reflects the work of the Makonde people of Tanzania or Mozambique, known for their exceptional woodcarving traditions.
Originally used in community meetings or by tribal elders, palaver chairs like these were symbols of authority and cultural storytelling. With their sculptural forms, these chairs are as much functional furniture as they are collectible art objects. They display beautifully in any setting and would suit a collector, interior designer, or anyone drawn to African art and craftsmanship.
Both chairs are in solid condition with signs of age, patina, and wear consistent with their history. They are stable, sturdy, and very visually striking. Happy to provide more pictures upon request
