Description
This antique Chinese Wedding Food Basket was originally imported as set decor for the latest Blade Runner film which was partially shot in New Zealand. It has four separate layers which can each be used to serve banquet food, or simply displayed as a stunning object in the home.
A Chinese wedding basket, often used during the betrothal (engagement) ceremony, is a decorative container, typically made of woven bamboo or wood and dyed or painted red, used to present gifts from the groom's family to the bride's. These baskets are carried on a shoulder pole, and filled with items like food, sewing materials, a nightgown, and red sheets for the wedding night. The colour red symbolises prosperity, joy, and love, which are central to Chinese weddings.
Dimensions are ~806mm tall x 730mm wide, originally purchased for $1,300.
