Description
This map of Lancashire was prepared in the English studio of Thomas Kitchin. IT IS NOT A REPRINT BUT ONE OF A NUMBER OF ORIGINALS. IT IS BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN CREATED IN 1756. Cheaper maps (circa $50) are likely to be replicas of one kind or another. Kitchin was prolific in the creation of world maps and in particular maps of the counties of Britain. In themselves, some of the latter are not extreme rarities, costing perhaps $150 or so unframed.
This particular map of Lancashire was also, in the mid sixties, owned by Geoffrey Lancashire (RIP) who also collected first-edition books and original works of historical value. He lived in Oldham, Lancashire, wrote scripts for the Lancastrian TV saga Coronation Street in the mid sixties. He could be said to have been a Lancastrian Lancashire who was quite fanatic about Lancashire. He was a friend of mine and he gave me this map as a keepsake when I emigrated to New Zealand from Manchester in 1969.
