Sir Edmund Percival Hillary (1919 - 2008) was born in Auckland and he was the only living New Zealander to appear on the nation's currency!

As a mountaineer and explorer Sir Ed achieved international recognition with the first successful climb of Mount Everest. He reached the 29,035-foot summit on 29th May, 1953 with Sherpa Tenzing Norgay.

After descending the mountain Sir Ed, with typical understatement, said that he and Tenzing had "knocked the bastard off" :)

Dame Catherine Anne Tizard ONZ GCMG GCVO DBE QSO DStJ (1931 – 2021) was the politician who served as mayor of Auckland (1983 - 1990, and as the 16th governor-general of NZ (1990 - 1996). She was the first woman to hold either office.
