William Gladstone was one of the great champions of social reform in the UK!
William Ewart Gladstone (1809 – 1898) was the legendary, British statesman who, in a career lasting over 60 years, was Prime Minister of the UK for 12 years, spread over four non-consecutive terms (the most of any British prime minister) beginning in 1868 and ending in 1894.
Gladstone also was Chancellor of the Exchequer four times, for over 12 years and an MP for 60 years.
Gladstone's legacy is one of reform including his strong advocacy for free education, labour rights, free trade, the simplification of the tax system, Home Rule for Ireland and the expansion and protection of tenant rights.
