Description
This is a rare and intricate piece of Masonic historic jewellery. From what I have researched and found out from the wonderful 'google', this piece is possibly Edwardian, c1900s, and is an 'Order of the Eastern Star' design.
The only other similar 9ct piece I could find online was a little plainer, less intricate without the seed pearls. However my piece does have a few of the teeny seed pearls missing. Hopefully a fairly simple restoration if desired. Or it could be worn or collected as is.
All the five coloured stones/jewels are present, and a wee safety chain attachment.
On the back of the brooch there are the marks, 9CT and four initials which may have been a previous owner's initials through the years. JSPJ? I can't be sure on the script. Going by the weight on my wee scale, it weights 6.63grms.
The information from the other similar piece I found is as follows: The Order of the Eastern Star is said to represent the Star of Bethlehem, symbolizing the descent of spirit into matter - the divine in man, or even the presence of God on earth in Masonic Symbolism. The five points and colours on the star are representative of five heroines in the Bible: blue for Adah, yellow for Ruth, white for Esther, green for Martha and red for Electa.
Other than what I've written, I can't remember anything else about this piece or how I came into it's possession. Although I have owned it for a long time.
