WW2 Royal Australian Airforce (RAAF) Other Ranks Cap Badge.
The RAAF traces its history back to the Imperial conference held in London in 1911, where it was decided aviation should be developed within the armed forces of the British Empire. Australia was the first dominion to do so, by approving the establishment of the Australian Aviation Corps. The RAAF became the 2nd Royal Air Arm to be formed in the British Commonwealth, following the British Royal Airforce. In WW2 with only 2 percent of enlistments in Australia, they accounted for almost 20 percent of those killed in action. This badge worn by all ranks below commissioned officers.
A wreath of Wattle surrounds the RAAF insignia, surmounted by the Tudor crown. The colour is very copper looking, on the back and front, or it could be copper gilding metal (mostly made of copper), or this could be copper cap badge. Some sites, selling similar badges, state gilt metal, or bronze. It does not appear to be made of brass? There seems to be quite a bit of variation on what the formulation of this type of badge contains. So I cannot say for certain what contains. It has very good detail on the front, especially the detail on the RAAF lettering. Two lugs on the back, east to west, lugs squashed flat.
Measures across 40 mm Down 47 mm
In good condition, very nice detail to front, no wear, some spots of oxidisation (two small black spots) on left-hand side leaves, and a very small spot on the first letter A, very faint. Lugs intact but squashed flat.
