Description
75mm plaque in remembrance of Yvonne Vieslet who was made Heroin of France.
Hers is a sad story. Born in Monceau-sur-Sambre on 8th June 1908 and was killed by a German soldier on October 12th, 1918, in Marchienne-au-Pont. Of the event, several versions exist. Such was the emotion provoked by the violent death of the child - known as the little Belgian Martyr.
In October 1918, the Germans, in the midst of their retreat, had transformed the Cercle Saint-Edouard to Marchienne-au-Pont into a transit camp. A group of French prisoners have just been transferred there. The prisoners were in a deplorable state and were starving. After school Yvonne persuaded her mother to go and see these prisoners. At the request of the Nuns the children give food to the prisoners and tend them through the grid of their enclosure. A German sentry, seeing what is happening, fires towards the group and mortally wounds Yvonne who collapses at the feet of her mother. Three people behind Yvonne were also injured. Yvonne is admitted to the civil hospital of Marchienne where she dies the next morning. Her funeral took place on October 16th, 1918. She is buried, after a very moving and emotional ceremony, in the cemetery of Monceau-au-Sambre.
