- Prisoner of War Group of 4 to 40155 Private John Ray Henson, 5th Reinforcements, 22nd Battalion, 2nd N.Z.E.F. Became a Prisoner of War on the 13th of December 1941 (reported missing from 22nd Battalion in Western Desert - believed P.O.W.
Released from Bardia on the 2nd of January 1942 and on 11th January 1942 safe in 2nd N.Z.E.F. Base Camp. Reported missing from 22ndBattalion on 14th July 1942 at the beginning of the First battle of Alamein - believed P.O.W. Reported as P.O.W. in Campo 685 by Vatican Radio 4th November 1942. Reported as P.O.W. in Campo 657 by Vatican Radio on 31st December 1942.
Transferred to Stalag IVB - P.O.W. number 279650. Reported safe in the U.K. on 23rd May 1945 and marched out to Puttick Wing.
Group includes 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, British War Medal and NZ War Service Medal. Also includes his numbered Returned Services Association Badge (with 54 Crown), a very nice photo and a full summary of his War Service.

1939/45 Star, Africa Star, Defense Medal, 1939/45 War Medal and NZ War Services Medal. Also includes his NZ Onward Badge, Returned Services Association Badge and a postcard photo of the recipient. Also, a small newspaper article on the recipient.
Private John Alexander Smith of Hikutaia returned from England with the last draft of released prisoners of War. He left New Zealand in 1940 for service in the Pacific. In 1941 he went to Egypt and saw action there with an Anti-Tank Corps. He was taken prisoner at El Alamein and was imprisoned in Italy until that country laid down arms. He was then transferred to Germany where he remained until the cessation of hostilities.
