This isn't just a VC-action link at Bn level. The trio recipient was in the same company as the VC winner and is indirectly mentioned in the citation for the famous bronze cross pattée.

Simpson was a private in the same company as Donald Forrester Brown VC on the first day of the New Zealand Division's attack on the Somme. Brown’s VC citation refers to the actions of 15 September 1916 and 2 October 1916. Of the former, the citation stated: “For most conspicuous bravery and determination in attack when the company to which he [i.e., Sgt Donald Forrester Brown] belonged suffered very heavy casualties in officers and men from machine gun fire. “At great personal risk this N.C.O. advanced with a comrade and succeeded in reaching a point within thirty yards of the enemy guns. Four of the gun crew were killed and the gun captured. “The advance of the company was continued till it was again held up by machine gun fire. Again Sjt. Brown and his comrade [who was not Simpson] with great gallantry rushed the gun and killed the crew. “After this second position had been won, the company came under very heavy shell fire, and the utter contempt for danger and coolness under fire of this N.C.O. did much to keep up the spirit of his men.” It was in this action on 15 September 1916 that Simpson was wounded, suffering a gun-shot wound to his leg and foot. He was therefore one of the "heavy casualties" in Donald Forrester Brown VC's company and is thus indirectly mentioned in the citation.
