Description
This book has be compiled by W.H. Fevyer and J.W. Wilson who searched the documents and Microfilm records at the Public Record Office in Kew, London.
The Royal Navy lists are from the ADM 188 Series and the Commissioned officer from the ADM 196 Series, the Royal Marines lists were obtained from The Chatham, Portsmouth, Plymouth Divisions and the Royal Marine Artillery records and the Royal Marines officers from the ADM 196 Series. Many Royal Navy ships are listed together with their crews and the medals they received.
The Campaign is also mentioned e.g. Gambia, Argo 1900-1901 and Jubaland or Somalia and those men vary from two to one ship H.M.S. Dwarf through to ships like H.M.S, Highflyer and H.M.S. Hyacinth which were larger vessels with much larger crews of 500 and more men.
Each ship is described by the Type, Displacement, Dimensions, Armament, and where built.
Each man is shown in alpha order with surname and initials, his appointment on the ship and his service number. Of course the officers did not initially have service numbers.
The new owner will find that there is a short section on abbreviations on page six which gives info to what is meant in the lists if the is an abbreviation against a man’s name. Other notes tell if a man’s medal was sent back for correction or if he was issued his medal when he has been sent to another ship.
A list of casualties is also included in this book. There are several appendices related to the Royal Indian Marine and RIM Ships and a section to the Royal Italian Navy. There is a small selection of Despatches for some actions with vey few drawings.
This is a really excellent book and a lot of effort has been made to create a worthy record for those who are unable to visit the PRO in Kew.
