Military shoulder stud (pip)

I am advised this is a British/Commonwealth WW1/2 period metal officer's rank 'pip' that goes on the shoulder epaulette on an army uniform. 1 pip = 2nd Lieutenant, 2 pips = Lieutenant, 3 pips = Captain, 1 pip and crown = Lt Colonel, 2 pips and crown = Colonel, 3 pips and crown = Brigadier.
