These wonderful old pistols are Very hard to find in the original 12” barrel configuration. This comes from this period outlined below…
The 1722 Long Land Pattern musket, also known as the "Brown Bess," was the standard-issue flintlock musket for the British Army, established by the Board of Ordnance. This musket was 62 inches long (without bayonet) and had a 46-inch barrel. It was a .75 caliber smoothbore weapon. The Long Land Pattern was the starting point for the Brown Bess…
Now… See that Single Screw, behind the Cock ? And see the Banana shape lock ?That means, it’s really OLD, as it doesn’t have the Second Screw (to hold the bridle) introduced in the later Pattern. I spotted this in CZERNYS, Italy. Cheaper than in UK, And so GRABBED it. For FUN! I meet great people even if I don’t make great profits. Almost all these 12” ones were shortened to 9”… so they go for Twice as much. I bought a similar one last year that had 3” of ramrod broken and Stuck Way down the barrel. So … THAT is why I got it “cheap”… everyone actually at the Auction didn’t bid ! So I sold it to my old Gunsmith at cost. He then had a nice Project, so at least he was happy. Nice wear on that stamp on the wood… almost smooth. And the single BIRMINGHAM proof. Later pistols have 2 proofs.. a “V” for Viewed and a “GP” for General Proof. Proofing was when pistol barrels were Double charged, to check their strength. All guns sold in England had to be proofed. Export ones didn’t. Skull cracker is very slightly cracked, photo. The Wooden Ramrod is broken off. They even had Wooden Ramrods for 46” muskets, way back then…300 yrs ago. Nice rust stains around those few iron pins. Shows its age and that it’s genuine. Come visit ! Lex.
