Kyo gunto (old military sword) were used in both the Sino-Japanese War (1894–1895) and the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905). It continued to be used in combination with Shin-gunto until the end of World War II.
Before 1945, many kyu gunto were distributed to commissioned officers to fill a demand for swords to Japan's expanding military officer classes.

Actually, this type of sword should have been purchased by the officers themselves from suppliers. Unlike those produced by the Arsenal, which all have inspection marks, many suppliers in Japan can make this sword, there is no requirement for inspection marks, and only a very few manufacturers will add manufacturing marks.
