Description
Antique Catholic Nuns French Crusifix, sterling silver or fine sliver (Pure silver) corpus and backing plate on ebony or dark oak, estimated around 200 plus years old.
Country of origin: France, early c1800, to late c1700's.
Solid silver Backing plate has multiple inscriptions, Nuns vows; and name of owner or crafts person.
Have taken this to three jewlers and an antiques dealer; they confirm it is sterling silver; or fine silver.
Only sterling silver hall mark is a small diamond at the top left of backing plate, and very small; tiny inscription.
Estimated 200 years plus of wear on the sterling silver, fine silver corpus face ( Jesus Face); silver backing plate has wear commiserate to age.
Back in c1700-c1800's Catholic Nuns undertook hard menial Labour, stone masons, carpentry, field work, they also built many churches and monasteries, this amazing religious Artefact; antique sterling silver Crusifix on ebony has done hard Labour around more than one Nuns neck; dangling from a long necklace of rosary beads; this veritable religious Artefact treasure would look great in any collection, maybe the Catholic Church might like to send it back to France where it belongs.
