FROM THE JEWELLER AND WATCHMAKERS LITTLE MUSEUM ANOTHER STUNNING ITEM FROM THE ESTATE MUSEUMS CABINET OF RARE PIECES ON DISPLAY AND IT IS NUMBERED No. 711 FOR ITEMS BOUGHT IN THE 1920's FROM A COLLECTION IN AUCKLAND OF MAORI CARVED ITEMS INCLUDING MAHE ( sinker stones ) **PLEASE NOTE NO OVERSEAS BUYERS AS THE ESTATE WISHES THESE ITEMS FROM THE ESTATE TO STAY WITH NEW ZEALAND COLLECTORS. ACCORDING TO ARCHAEOLOGISTS FISHING WAS A KEY ACTIVITY FOR THE MAORI PEOPLE AND THE MAHE COULD BE USED TO ANCHOR SMALL NETS AS WELL AS WEIGHTS FOR LENGTHS OF FISHING LINE. Estate Museum item a Maori mahe ( fishing sinker stone ) hand cut from dense very hard stone with a hole through the center and some braided cord attached and a length of thinner braided cord which the estate feels is from animal skin, it is a quite rare piece and the estate Museum notes mention the braided cord has sort of animal fat and soot on it. This mahe was part of a collection bought by the estate grandfather in the late 1920's for their little Museum display cabinets of carved Maori items of stone, Pounamu, bone and wooden items. The total length including the braided fishing cord and the mahe is 9.1/2 inches ( 24 cm ) and the thickness of the mahe is 1 inch ( 2.3 cm ). Please view the several pictures I have listed and all questions welcome. I am also listing various rare carved and polished Kauri amber/gum pieces for the last member of the family estate .
