Orthoceras were Cephalopods and lived over 450 million years ago, they are related to modern day squid, octopus and cuttlefish. What you are seeing is a cross section of the hard, segmented cone shaped shell, the soft tissue doesn't fossilise. The line running down the middle is called a siphuncle and helps maintain the animals depth in the water column. The black area is polished natural matrix.
