Description
Petoskey Stone I was thrilled to find this in the collection, I've seen videos of people finding these and I've only ever seen one other in the flesh - a polished specimen from this collection that has sold. I have included 2 photos of that polished specimen here.... perhaps the buyer would like to get this one polished - or leave it natural. A Petoskey stone is a rock and a fossil, composed of a fossilised rugose coral, Hexagonaria percarinata. They are found at various beaches and some inland areas in Michigan, no where else in the world! They are formed as a result of glaciation. Rocks were picked up by the shifting ice sheets, this grinds them smooth and then they were deposited across various (but limited) parts of Michigan. They are pieces of an ancient coral reef that thrived in the Devonian period, 350 million years ago. The stone is approx 80mm x 80mm x 50mm (it's a very odd shape)
I have been asked to part out a large fossil and mineral collection, this specimen is from that collection. Keep an eye on my listings as I'll be listing some unique specimens as I get time.
