Enchodus fang - $16 each Ouled Abdoun Basin, Morocco Cretaceous period, 105 - 66 million years old
The pics are a sample of what is available... I can choose randomly for you or send you a pic with a selection for you to choose from. An uncommon fossil to find for sale in New Zealand and fairly underrated among collectors, these fangs give absolutely no illusion to what they are and what they do with a sharp tip and a forward facing cutting edge running the entire height of the tooth. Enchodus had 4 fangs at the front of its mouth (2 top, 2 bottom). These fangs were massive for the size of the fish, reaching a maximum size of just over 60mm. Moroccan species of Enchodus reached approx 1.5m in length. These teeth all have minor repairs, which is very common for Enchodus teeth. They are thin and inherently fragile and often break when being removed from the matrix. Nicknamed the Sabre Toothed Herring, it was of no relation to Herrings (science has a sense of humour sometimes!). Enchodus is most well known for having 4 large fangs at the front of its mouth, which it shed as the fish grew. It had many, smaller dagger like teeth behind the fangs. Although unrelated, the best modern analogue for dentition is the Barracuda. It would not surprise me if Enchodus hunted in a similar manner too. Enchodus was a successful predator... but was also prey to sharks and Mosasaurs.
