Description
A 19th century photograph of Mr Hugh Densham(1838-1910) the First Teacher at Clifton Public School 1872-1874. Located in the southernmost Invercargill suburb of Clifton, I imagine when the school was established in 1872, it may well have been a single class room.
Mr Densham went on to teach in Mornington, Dunedin, but by 1890 when he was living in Waituna, Manawatu-Wanganui region, his occupation is recorded as sheep farmer.
The central image measures 23cm by 29cm(the frame 40cm by 51cm), it's protected behind glass and ready to hang. The photographic image is in good condition, other than being a bit faded, which is not surprising given it's age. However, there is a noticeable stain of the mount surround at the bottom.
See photos.
Note: I also have a substantial framed panoramic photograph of ex-Clifton School students/teachers? gathered in front of the school at the 60-year, 1932 Diamond Jubilee celebration and I will also be auctioning that presently.
