This cased set is a true find. Not only are the straight razors in remarkably good condition but the set includes a branded foot care / corn trimmer folding knife and a celluloid nail care pick and cuticle tool. As partners came and went, this business had a number of name modifications, but best evidence suggest that the Wade Wingfield and Rowbotham name was only in use between 1816 and 1850. While is not possible to fine down the date of the set, it at least must fall within those 34 years. This is also backed up by the relatively small bend in the handle – the earliest straight razors were exactly that – straight, this set somewhat later but not like the modern handles, bent to fit the grip more readily. Both blades are emblazoned with a quote from Shakespeare and the blades have minor discolouration but no rust or damage to the edges. The company name appears below the jimps and fully extended teach razor measures 245mm. The handles are 146mm long and the blade (including the tailpiece which has not previously been included), measure145mm. The scales on both razors are celluloid while the scales on the corn knife appear to be bone as does the nail care tool.. There would have been a third tool but this was not present when this set came into our possession 25 years ago. There is wear commensurate with age but careful treatment, and we would be confidant that a buyer with the knowledge and skill to do minor refurbishment would have a treasured set to be proud of.
