Description
This listing is for a GIANT "Cartwheel" British ONE Penny Coin
Dated and minted Circa 1797 (they were made for several years with the same date)
INFLATION-PROOF coinage
The last image shows the ONE PENNY "Cartwheel" beside the TWO PENNY Catwheel, listed individually SHOWN for comparison ONLY IE NOT INCLUDED with the 1 Penny sale
It weighed when made ONE OUNCE of COPPER which was the value of one penny in 1797...this also made the coin UN-COUNTERFEITABLE, As there would be NO PROFIT in it for the fakers!! = AWESOME
In 1797 the Royal Mint decided to contract Paul Bolton to strike some new copper coins on his new steam presses. So, under King George III, they issued copper pennies The public hated it because it was so big and heavy and it was only ever issued in that one the year 1797. This largest-ever bronze 1 Penny coin usually comes in well-used condition with lots of heavy edge nicks, as pure copper nicks easily.
Alas these did prove to be a little too large to be "practical and they were withdrawn after a few years of usage
The had proved to be EXCELLENT Scale Weights for weighing produce as every Brit. knew that these coins were a legal tender weight of ONE ounce.....SADLY that use led to many (MOST!) having unsightly "dings" to their edges
Consequently VERY FEW Cartwheel Pennies are ever seen in VERY NICE condition
BEING pure Copper they WORE away easily
