Description
HUGE Solid Brass Apothecary MORTAR & Pestle
It is hard to imagine what such a big mortar was intended for?
The date applied to old items often implies military usage, to me anyway
Purchased in the UK several years ago, so I assume that it is British-made
DATED 1733 So made many decades before Captain COOK found NZ
250 mm across at mouth
200 mm tall
The (later) Pestle is 200 mm in length
WEIGHS approx. 15 Kg so will be expensive to post
The Brass Pestle is not original to this Mortar, but would work if you actually wanted to USE the Mortar to bring "stuff" ?
I do not know who the maker was?, but I assume that the Brass Caster (Foundryman) was a person with the initials "R.T." and that he dated this monumental work because he was rather proud of it
Many years ago an art student friend of mine told me that at Art School they regarded any Bronze casting that did not EXPLODE coming out of the mould? to be a moderate success
This ancient Brass Mortar displays many areas of crudity and has several areas that could be seen as forging flaws or defects
No doubt representative of casting technology of that time
THE LARGEST MORTAR that I have EVER SEEN
Will present many hours of "Brasso Polishing" activity to the lucky winning bidder
POSTAGE cost is a GUESS and I will happily REFUND any overcharges
