Around 1885 -1895 mainly due to the discovery of large amounts of oil which lead to a huge demand for barrels , barrel making by hand gave way to automation . By 1900 a very large number of coopers were no longer needed , and more to the point neither was the rather specialised tools they used. Unlike other trades, barrel makers planes etc could not be turned to other purposes. Thus ..there care far fewer Coopers tools around than other woodworking tools. AS YOU SEE IT...
