Description
Late 1800’s unmarked broad Kent pattern hewing axe / hatchet.
I say unmarked because as far as I can tell, the “A” on the non bevelled side was inscribed by a previous owner and nothing to do with the makers of the blade.
beautiful aged condition. Nice even and dark patina. Still holds a great Kent pattern shape. No cracks. Fitted with a nice and comfortable short straight handle. I put a rounder grip handle on this one because there is “some weight” in the head so it’s just a more comfortable grip and you ultimately have better control, as hewing axes are often used for more detailed work.
Like most of my axes I will be selling that have handles, this one is ready to be hung up as a great addition to any axe or tool collection. Or you can sharpen it and put it to work. Thats up to you :)
Measurements Blade: 140mm Butt to blade: 170mm Handle: 310mm Weight: 1.2kg
*this is the first time this axe will be sold in Nz marketplace, as is the case with 99% of my axes. I have gathered most from the uk and USA over the past 15 years.
I will be letting go of quite a large percentage of my axe and hatchet collection here on trade me, all types of patterns and origins and quality's (from mint to Rusty). There will be both with and without handles and some very nice handles by them selves. will not be doing pick ups, so post only. And no winner of any auction will get any special access to the rest of my collection. Selling via Trade me uploads only. Cheers.

That'll do it. Cheers for the info. Trade Me User • 9:53 am, Sun, 4 May No worries, I welcome any questions :). Many of my axes have stories behind them. It is also hard to get everything in the listing description given only the certain amount of characters aloud. And even in my previous answer, could explain more but already used up the max amount of words haha. And also if I have created a patina on any axe head like suggested, I always add that to the description as I am rather proud of my restorations haha :) Cheers. Trade Me Seller • 12:53 pm, Sun, 4 May If it's unmarked, then how can you claim to know its age? From the pitting? And patina? Axes like this were made well into the twentieth century. And an acid bath can create a similar effect in a very short order. So how can you guarantee your claim of age? I'm not suggesting you are wrong, just asking on what basis you are asserting your assessment of age? Trade Me User • 8:47 pm, Sat, 3 May I bought this along with the baker hewer that I have listed, and a baker claw hatchet from a collector in the u.s., He had bought all 3 from the great grandson of the original owner who passed in 1912. the two others are partial stamped so I tracked them down in the baker 1895 catalogue, and in that catalogue it depicts this head to exact dimensions, but because I can see zero trace of the stamp left, I can’t say it’s a 1895 baker hand made. But given all the info I am almost certain it is. Trade Me Seller • 10:00 pm, Sat, 3 May
