Description
The Stanley rule number 36 is a very small folding caliper rule made from boxwood with brass fittings.
The rule has a sliding brass caliper rule with measurements on the brass caliper.
The caliper feature is ideal for measuring the thickness of on an object, traditionally rope or wire.
The caliper rule is marked out in inches with 1/16 inch increments.
The caliper shown in the photo is classed as a caliper left-hand due to the caliper being on the left-hand arm.
The rules with the caliper on the right arm are therefore called caliper right-hand.

WOOD BOXWOOD Treen TOOL
Boxwood IS NOT the "cheap rubbish wood" it might SOUND like?
About BOXWOOD.....
Slow growth of box renders the wood ("boxwood") very hard (possibly the hardest in Europe along with Cornus mas) and heavy, and free of grain produced by growth rings, making it ideal for cabinet-making, the crafting of flutes and oboes, engraving, marquetry, woodturning, tool handles, mallet heads and as a substitute for ivory; the wood is yellow in color.
"Digging sticks" fashioned by Neanderthals more than 170,000 years ago in Italy were made from boxwood.
The British wood-engraver Thomas Bewick pioneered the use of boxwood blocks for wood-engraving.
In Old English, a box was originally a receptacle made of boxwood
