WWIl 1944 W.GILPIN Kent pattern axe. Beautiful collectors piece. (Cracked) Broad arrow stamp.
This is a beautiful display piece, I chose this handle specifically for the dark grain it has on the stamped side of the axe down by the bottom. (where your hand would grip). I thought it suited this WW2 collectors item wonderfully. Has a nice edge to show off. The stark difference between the nice dark even patina and the shine off the steel underneath it all.
The head Does have a crack on the non stamped side. So someone may want to repair it, but since it is on the side that was against the wall as it hung on my display wall I never bothered and personally think repairing it would only make this collectors item look worse and worth less.
One of the top steel works manufacturers of the past century, Gilpin steel works of Cannock, England produced some of the finest quality axe heads, bill hooks, adze, scythe blades and more. W.gilpin made many highly collectible axe heads like the chip chop 1 and 2, The gilpin fire axe, the military issued heads of wwII, and of course anything that bears the gilpin "X" axes logo stamped on it. (Two axes, making an X shape)
