Patterson were a smaller lamp manufacturer in the North-East of England. This lamp is totally original with tally number. Weight1.4kg, height 25cms. This is a lamp that has done what it was made to do with dings and knocks. I purchased this lamp form an ex-miner/collector from the north-east of England in the late 1990s. The plate reads ‘Patterson Lamps Limited Felling-on Tyne’ and stamped tally number ‘930’. The base is also stamped ‘Newcastle-on Tyne’ Type A1’and tally number 930. Patterson produced lamps in Felling before moving production to Gateshead near Newcastle. It has the usual 2 gauze system, wick picker wire with spring and wick. It has a high tension electrode and an electronic lighting disc which allows it to be ignited in the lamp room without opening the lamp. These safety lamps had a magnetic lock (deactivated) to prevent it being opened underground. The Marsaut miners lamp was a type of safety lamp, designed by French engineer Jean Marsaut in 1882, that adapted the Mueseler lamp by adding a second conical gauze to improve safety. This innovation prevented the flame from igniting methane in coal mines, a significant danger of the time.
