Description
The baby Maui is brought ashore by his grandfather Tama-nui-ki-te-rangi, still wrapped in his mother's topknot. In one tradition Maui was stillborn, or miscarried, and his mother Taranga wrapped him in her tikitiki (topknot) – this is how he got his name, Maui-tikitiki-a-Taranga.
This print is numbered 91/100 and measures 375mm x 275mm. It sits in a frame measuring 60cm x 45cm. Unfortunately, the artwork itself, which we are told is on handmade paper, has separated from its backing but this is a simple fix.
The artist, Robyn Kahukiwa, has recently deceased, making this an even more priceless work.
A similar but slightly larger edition sold at Auction last year for $956.
