Description
A small original signed watercolour painting "Innsbruck" 1909 by renowned UK/NZ artist Charles Nathaniel Worsley(1862-1923). Interestingly, on the reverse is another smaller watercolour titled "Langenfeld(Tirol)". The reason is that the artist carried and painted in a sketchbook on tour - presumably including on both sides of a page. This is supported by the sale in 2000 of Worsley's 1909 sketchbook from his journey through "the Suez to Port Said, the Messina Strait to Naples and then by land from Sorrento to Perugia, Innsbruck and Tyrol to Switzerland". The sketchbook sold for $6600.
Born in the UK, Worsley emigrated to NZ c1898 and by 1900 was living in ChCh in a "large Gloucester St house near Latimer Square". He regularly travelled between NZ and UK/Europe including in 1909 when these paintings were created and on a final occasion in 1923 when Worsley died suddenly in Italy.
Worsley exhibited with the Royal Academy (London), Canty Soc of Arts(1898-1917), NZ Academy of Fine Arts(1898-1921), Akld Art Soc(1901-1923) and other occasions such as the Jubilee Exhibition of 1900-1901 and NZ International Exhibition 1906-1907. His artworks are represented in the ChCh Art Gallery, Akld Art Gallery, NSW Art Gallery, Dunedin Public Art Gallery, Univ of Canty and Hocken Collection.
A retrospective ChCh Art Gallery 1994 exhibition of Worsley's paintings said "his speciality was exquisite depictions of picturesque Spanish and Swiss scenes, many of which are in the Gallery's own collection".
Worsley was a prolific and commercially successful painter and similarly there are many examples of his works sold at Fine Art auctions. The average realised price for Worsley watercolour paintings is $1907.
The artworks' frame measures 46cm by 40cm, they're protected behind glass, in good condition and ready to hang. See photos.
