Description
Antique 1864 engraving of the Prince & Princess of Wales with baby Prince Albert Victor. The engraving is by William Holl(1808-1871) from a photograph by Vernon Heath(1819-1895) and published by Moore, McQueen & Co in Nov 1864.
The Prince is the eldest son of Queen Victoria and would become King Edward VII and from whom we get the term the "Edwardian Age". The Princess (originally of Denmark) would become Queen Alexandra. The couple married in 1863 and Prince Albert Victor was born in Jan 1864, the year of this portrait. As the first grandson of Queen Victoria, the baby Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence was himself heir to the throne, but died in 1892 at the age of 28 - before both his father and his grandmother. Interestingly, he was also a suggested 1888 Jack the Ripper suspect, although one might regard that as a bit of a long stretch and somewhat mischievous.
The engraving is held within a thick white card surround that opens up. The visible oval image measures 17cm by 21cm and the card is 42cm by 51cm. Condition is reasonably good and appropriate to such an antique age. You will notice a mark, which fortunately is in the left of the title cut-out rather than the oval cut-out, where the image appears.
