Description
An antique portrait miniature signed "Stieler" with condition issues.
Joseph Karl Stieler(1781-1858) was appointed court painter by King Ludwig I of Bavaria in 1820. As such he was commissioned to paint portraits for the King's 'Gallery of Beauties' in the Nymphenburg Palace, Munich. Between 1827 and 1850 Stieler produced 36 oil on canvas paintings for the gallery. One of these featured Nanette Kaula(1812-1876), a Jewish beauty who he painted in 1829 when she was 17. Nanette Kaula would become Mrs Nanette Heine 9 years later when she married a Hamburg banker. This young lady is also the subject of this signed miniature and presumably would date to 1829-30.
The painting itself measures just 6cm by 8cm, the whole object 7cm by 11cm and there is glass at the front to protect. Regarding condition - there are some 'stain' marks around the edges and a mark just under the chin - see photos. Fortunately, neither is overly serious and the lady's portrait is mainly unaffected.
See photos.
The highest price achieved for a large Stieler canvas portrait is USD$52,620 and six in excess of USD$25,000. In contrast, the highest for a miniature is USD$956.
