Description
An antique lithograph titled "View from the Tilt Yard Bridge, Kenilworth Castle".
The artist is identified in the bottom left corner as "J Salter del et lith" and the lithography company in the bottom right corner as "Day & Son, Lithographers to The Queen", whilst the title and the publisher "Walter T Parson's, Kenilworth" appear in the middle at the bottom. John William Salter lived 1825-1891 and the company Day & Son was established in 1823, granted the title of "Lithographers to The Queen" in 1837 and ceased operating in 1867. All this helps date this item to approximately 1850-1867.
In respect of the scene depicted - the "Tilt Yard" was so named because in medieval times it was where the jousting(tilting) took place and Kenilworth Castle appears often in history, such as the location of a six-month siege in 1266 and as the home base for the Lancastrians during the War of the Roses etc.
The lithograph is printed on quite thick paper which measures 45cm by 35cm and the image itself 27cm by 19cm. Other than obvious signs of ageing, particularly to the outer margins of the paper, the artwork is actually in good condition.
