A response to Hind's story: All children are our children

January, 2024. Six-year-old Hind Rajab watched her family shot beside her in a car in Gaza. Alone, injured, terrified, she called emergency services again and again. “Come get me, I’m scared.” No one came. For three days, she waited — surrounded by their bodies. Paramedics attempted to rescue her and they too were killed. When they finally found her, it was too late. The car was riddled with 335 bullet holes. Hind’s story pierced hearts across the globe. “Humanity” honors Hind’s courage, her voice, and the unbearable silence that followed. May we never stop hearing her call.

Artist Statement - Ute Schroder - Textile Artist

My art is about the human experience. It is about telling stories with fabric and thread, with colors and stitches. It is a conversation with the beautiful, broken world around us. My process of hand embroidery is slow and thoughtful, creating space for reflection. Often I follow an initial idea and allow the work to grow and evolve. I love the intimacy, textural and tactile richness of working with fabrics and the slowness of stitching by hand seems a subversive act in our fast-paced world. I have always been surrounded by fabric, yarns and needles. There has not been a time in my life when the women in my family have not created with textiles. Each stitch I make connects me to the women before me. I feel a social responsibility to embrace and carry on this tradition, to subvert it to reach out into the hearts of others.
