Description
An antique Victorian engraving titled "The First Day of Oysters".
This engraving is from a folio of 48 steel engravings, published by Cassell & Company Ltd in 1887 and featuring works of the "Imperial Gallery of British Art".
Each engraving was accompanied by a detailed description, and in this instance, I do have the description page and also the facing page.
Beneath the engraving appears the title, the name of the painter Alexander Fraser(1786-1865) and the engraver William Greatbatch(1802-1894)
The engraving measures 30cm by 23cm and the sheets(60cm by 47cm). The engraving's in generally good condition and appropriate to age, with some minor spotting around the outside.
See photos.
NOTE: Taken from a folio's back cover that I have seen a copy of:
"In sixteen parts at 5s each. Also issued in four divisions at 21s each or one volume £5 5s". "Proof copies of which have been subscribed for by our leading Royal and Noble families". "Only a limited number of copies of the engravings will be produced, after which the plates will be destroyed".
