Description
An antique Victorian engraving titled "Death of the Red Deer".
This substantial engraving is from a folio of 48 steel engravings, published by Cassell & Company Ltd in 1887 and featuring works of the "Imperial Gallery of British Art".
Each was accompanied by a detailed description, but in this instance, I do not have the description page. Beneath the engraving appears the title and the name of the painter Sir David Wilkie RA(1785-1841) and the engraver Peter Lightfoot(1805-1885).
The engraving measures 45cm by 26cm(the sheet 60cm by 47cm) and it's in generally good condition appropriate to age, with some minor marks, but nothing of significance.
See photos.
NOTE: Taken from a folio's back cover that I have seen a copy of:
"In sixteen parts at 5s each. Also issued in four divisions at 21s each or one volume £5 5s". "Proof copies of which have been subscribed for by our leading Royal and Noble families". "Only a limited number of copies of the engravings will be produced, after which the plates will be destroyed".
