Description
A special antique Victorian engraving titled "The Morning After the Wreck".
This engraving is from a folio of 48 steel engravings, published by Cassell & Company Ltd in 1887 and featuring works of the "Imperial Gallery of British Art".
Each engraving was accompanied by a detailed description, and in this instance, I do have the description page and also the facing page.
Beneath the engraving appears the title, the name of the painter Clarkson Stanfield RA(1793-1867) and the engraver John Cousen(1804-1880). Certainly it is one of the finest and most interesting maritime engravings in British art.
The engraving measures a substantial 37cm by 25cm and the sheets(60cm by 47cm). The engraving's in generally good condition and appropriate to age, with some spotting around the outside.
See photos.
NOTE: Taken from a folio's back cover that I have seen a copy of:
"In sixteen parts at 5s each. Also issued in four divisions at 21s each or one volume £5 5s". "Proof copies of which have been subscribed for by our leading Royal and Noble families". "Only a limited number of copies of the engravings will be produced, after which the plates will be destroyed".
