Description
Three small framed watercolours by the UK illustrator Marjorie L Davies(1906-2007).
Marjorie Louise Davies (nee Clements) was born in Hampstead and studied at the St Martins School of Art, London. In 1931 her colour illustrations appeared in the Blackie's Annual. In 1935 she married, and during WWII joined the Women's Land Army, working on Sussex farms. After the war, she approached Enid Blyton and subsequently her illustrations featured in Blyton magazines and annuals. She also produced colour plates for later publications of Lewis Carrol's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. She died on the 28th Nov 2007, aged 101, which was the same date as Enid Blyton(28 Nov 1968). In an interview in later life, it was recorded that her greatest regret and worst commercial decision had been turning down an offer to illustrate one of Enid Blyton's book series.
For much of Marjorie Davies' life, she lived in the village of Chailey, East Sussex and the views pictured in these small framed watercolours are of locations in Chailey. For example, pictured are the Parish Church of St Peter, with origins in the 13th Century and the War Memorial on the Village Green unveiled in 1920 and on which the names of 57 villagers who died in the World Wars are inscribed.
You will also notice a "Gorringes" label on the glass at the front, which I've left intact. It helps with provenance, because it shows this artwork was sold from the well-regarded Gorringes Auction House, which was first established in 1920 in Lewes, near Brighton and just 7 miles from Chailey.
The bottom two watercolours measure 17.5cm by 12.5cm and the one on top is slightly smaller at 16.5cm by 11.5cm. They are protected behind glass, in good condition and the frame which measures 48cm by 36cm is ready to hang.
