Description

Antique Victorian framed coloured engravings of "Amphibia".

The two coloured engraving plates are titled "Amphibia, Order: Batrachia". At the bottom of the left plate appears the following details: J.D.C. Sowerby, delin J.W. Lowry, sculp The "delin" means he drew it and "sculp" means he carved it(engraved)

James De Carle Sowerby(1787-1871) was an English naturalist, mineralogist, botanist and illustrator. Joseph Wilson Lowry(1803-1879) was an English engraver who specialised in scientific subjects. I believe these plates date to the 1850s or thereabouts.

The two plates are in a frame that measures 55cm by 45cm, they're protected behind glass and ready to be hung. They are in generally good condition appropriate to their antique age, with some minor smudges and marks, but nothing significant.
