Description
This auction is for a stunning coloured, and very dramatic ‘close up’, cockpit image of one of the competitors, presumably ‘Liberty’ (USA) or ‘Australia II’ (Australia), in the 25th Defense of the America’s Cup sailed off Newport, Rhode Island, June – September 1983.
The 1983 America’s Cup was the occasion of the first winning challenge to the New York Yacht Club, which had successfully defended the cup for a period of 132 years. An Australian syndicate representing the Royal Perth Yacht Club fielded ‘Australia II’, skippered by John Bertrand, against defender ‘Liberty’, skippered by Dennis Connor. ‘Australia II’ won the match races to with the America’s Cup, ending the longest streak in sporting history and ending US domination of the racing series.
Well framed under glass in a gold coloured metallic frame with a white matt and blue and red wash lines.
